Short answer
The ideal television position puts the center of the screen at seated eye level — roughly 42 inches from the floor — at a viewing distance of about 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal. Above a standard mantel is usually well above that, which is why so many mounted televisions are uncomfortable to watch.
Where both a fireplace and a television must occupy one wall, the workable solutions are: put the television on an adjacent wall, design a lower fireplace with a taller surround so the screen lands correctly, recess the screen into a niche, or accept the compromise deliberately and add swivel seating so people can choose what to face.

The fireplace-versus-television argument
A room can only have one focal point, and this wall is usually asked to provide two. There are four honest resolutions:
- Separate them. Fireplace on one wall, television on another, seating angled or swiveling between. The most comfortable answer where the room allows it.
- Design the fireplace for the screen. If the wall is being rebuilt anyway, a lower firebox and a taller surround can put the screen near correct height. This only works when it is planned from the start — it is a millwork and framing decision, not a mounting decision.
- Recess the screen. A niche framed into the wall lets the television sit flush and reduces its visual weight considerably. Requires framing depth, ventilation and cable routing planned in advance.
- Accept it and mitigate. Mount above the mantel, use a pull-down or tilting mount, and add swivel chairs. Many family rooms end here, and that is fine — as long as it was a decision rather than a default.
What does not work is deciding on installation day. The wall's framing, blocking, power and cable routing all follow from this choice, and all of them are settled at rough-in.

A quick test worth doing before any millwork is drawn: sit where you will actually sit, have someone hold a cardboard rectangle the size of the screen at the proposed height, and watch it for two minutes. Discomfort shows up immediately, and it costs nothing to discover now.
Size is the other half. Bigger is not automatically better in a room where the screen is also a large black rectangle for twenty hours a day — which is the argument for recessing it, or for a wall dark enough that it recedes.
Designing built-ins around a fireplace
Flanking built-ins are the most requested millwork in a house. What decides whether they look architectural or added-on:
- Symmetry, absorbed. Fireplaces are almost never perfectly centered on the wall. Custom cabinetry can take up the difference by making one cabinet fractionally deeper or wider than the other — invisible in the room, impossible with stock. This is a core argument in the millwork guide.
- Depth. Upper shelving around 11–12 inches deep suits books and objects; deeper shelves swallow things. Lower cabinets 15–18 inches deep hold equipment and games.
- Closed below, open above is the reliable default: mess hidden, display visible.
- Shelf spacing. Adjustable throughout, and taller at the bottom. Fixed shelves at equal spacing are the giveaway of a piece designed without thinking about what goes on it.
- Meet the ceiling deliberately. Either run the millwork to the ceiling with a crown, or stop it at a clearly intentional height. A gap of a few inches is the worst of both.
- Light the shelves. Wiring must be planned before the boxes are built, since it runs inside them.
- Match the trim profile to the room's existing mouldings so the new work reads as original — particularly in older houses.
Equipment, cables and power
This is where good-looking installations fail in practice.
- Decide where the equipment lives before framing: behind the screen, in a base cabinet, or in a closet or rack elsewhere. Each needs different provisions.
- Ventilation. Receivers and consoles generate real heat. A sealed cabinet cooks them. Vent the back, add a grille, or specify a fan.
- Signal path. Equipment hidden behind closed doors needs infrared repeaters or radio-frequency remotes, or nothing will respond.
- Run conduit, not just cable. A length of smurf tube from the screen position to the equipment location means the next generation of cable can be pulled through without opening the wall. It costs almost nothing at rough-in and is the single most future-proof decision on this wall.
- Power behind the screen and at the equipment location, on the same circuit where possible to avoid ground issues.
- Network. A wired connection to the media location outperforms wireless for streaming, and is trivial to install while walls are open.
- Blocking. Solid backing behind the mount position, sized for the screen you might buy later, not just the one you own.
Dedicated media rooms
A room built for watching rather than a living room that also watches. Different rules apply:
- Light control is the priority. Blackout window treatments, and ideally no windows at all on the screen wall.
- Dark, matte surfaces around the screen. Glossy paint and pale walls reflect the image back and wash out contrast.
- Tiered seating if the room is deep enough — a rear row raised 8 to 12 inches transforms sight lines. This is a framing decision.
- Low-level lighting on dimmers: step lights, sconces on the side walls, nothing that hits the screen.
- Plan for snacks. A counter, a small refrigerator, a surface for drinks. The rooms that get used have somewhere to put a bowl.
Acoustics
The most overlooked half of a media space. A room with hard floors, bare walls and a flat ceiling sounds harsh no matter what equipment is in it.
- Soft surfaces absorb. A large rug, upholstered seating, lined drapery and fabric panels do most of the work.
- Break up parallel hard surfaces. Two facing bare walls create flutter echo; bookshelves, art and textiles interrupt it.
- Insulate the walls between a media room and the rest of the house while they are open. Sound isolation is nearly impossible to add later.
- Solid-core doors and a decent seal make a substantial difference for very little money.
- Speaker positions belong on the elevation. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers need framing, wiring and blocking decided before drywall.
